  • Detailed driving directions from Cairns and other regional hubs are available. The primary route from Cairns (via the Mulligan Highway) is sealed and accessible year-round. Some coastal roads may require a 4WD during the wet season (Feb-Apr). This ensures a stress-free arrival at Mungumby Lodge.

“A serene tropical oasis nestled at the foot of the rainforest covered mountains on the banks of a quiet little stream...oh come on what more could you ask? The owners were very friendly and helpful. The cabins where very clean and welcoming with comfy beds. We ate at the quirky, Lions Den Pub just a short drive down the road and the food and atmosphere were great. The lodge is only a short 26km outside of Cooktown and I would give it 6 stars if I could. Thank you Hamish for you hospitality.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Mungumby Lodge offers free Wi-Fi access for guests. There is limited mobile coverage in most of the Cook Shire. For communication, the lodge portable office telephone is available for calls. If you have a compatible smartphone, you are welcome to use voice-over Wi-Fi as it also works from your bungalow.

Wi-Fi is available Free of charge for guests for responsible use through the immediate grounds and from your bungalow. The front desk is typically staffed daily from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. If you wish to down load movies or update please do so prior to arrival of when in a 5G network.

Mungumby Lodge accepts a range of payment methods for your convenience, including credit cards (Visa, Mastercard), debit cards, mobile payments, and cash. Please note that major credit cards like Diners Club or American Express are not accepted. A credit card, debit card, or cash deposit may be required at check-in for security and incidental charges.

Mungumby Lodge is located in Helenvale/Rossville, approximately 25 minutes south of Cooktown.

  • From Cairns: You have two main routes:
    • Inland Mulligan Highway: This road is sealed from Mareeba, Lakeland, Kings Plain, and then the Little Annan River. It is generally open 12 months of the year, day and night, though occasional closures can occur at the McLeod River crossing (between Mt Carbine and Palmer River roadhouse).
    • Coastal Road (Bloomfield Track): This is a highly scenic route, sealed until Cape Tribulation and then again after the Bloomfield River. However, this road/track requires AWD/4×4 and is frequently closed between February and March due to swollen river crossings during the wet season. It is often recommended to travel this route north-to-south for the best views and road information.
  • Lodge Driveway: The main road to the Lodge driveway is sealed. The 4 km driveway (Mungumby Road) itself is unsealed but fine in a 2WD vehicle between May and January. However, an all-wheel drive (AWD) is recommended during February and April, particularly in the wet season.
  • Navigation: Mungumby Lodge is well signposted from both the Mulligan Highway and the coastal routes. Be aware that some digital maps may place you incorrectly due to the remote location, so paying attention to signage is key.

Breakfast: A delicious optional Continental Buffet Breakfast is available daily if pre booked at an additional charge of AUD $24 per person (adult) and $18 (child 6-12). Breakfast is served from 07:30 AM and is cleared by 09:00 AM. This includes fresh-cut fruit platter, preserves, toasts, cereal, soft cheese, boiled eggs, juice, whole fruits and freshly made tea or plunger coffee. Nespresso coffee options are available at an extra cost. Other Meals: While lunch and dinner are not included in your stay, Mungumby Lodge offers excellent self-catering facilities. Guests have access to the Aussie Fire Pit and BBQ Pavilion, which is equipped with a cooking hob, microwave, electric jug, toaster, pots, pans, a full-size fridge/freezer, salad bowls, plates, and cutlery. Many guests choose to bring food from Cooktown outlets to prepare or reheat here. Alternatively, evening meals or lunches can be enjoyed in Cooktown itself, or at the popular Lions Den Hotel (a 5-minute drive away), which offers a unique historic pub atmosphere. The lodge also stocks numerous beverages and snacks at the homestead bar.

Given the natural environment and activities at Mungumby Lodge, it’s recommended to bring:

  • Sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots: Essential for exploring the rainforest trails and surrounding areas.
  • Broad-brimmed hat: To protect yourself from the sun, as even short exposure can lead to sunburn.
  • Light protective clothing: Especially important during the dry season (May-December) to prevent sunburn and insect bites.
  • Light waterproof clothing: During the wet season (February-April), weather can change quickly, so waterproof gear is advisable.
  • Insect repellent: highly recommend for hikes, coastal walks or birdwatching.
  • Personal food items: If you plan to utilize the self-catering facilities at the BBQ Pavilion or plant base milk options for breakfast.
  • Rechargeable devices: Given limited mobile reception, consider any e-readers, cameras, or music devices you might want to use offline.

Please note: car camping fridges are not allowed inside the bungalows to prevent floor damage. You are welcome to plug them in and leave them outside your bungalow.
