Preferring an environment-first strategy, we have foregone Ecotourism clubs and apply those funds into direct actions on site that will benefit our rainforest ecosystem for decades to come. Actions such as nurturing a wildlife reserve for endemic endangered species right here on our land which runs parallel to Mangkal-Mangkalba (Cedar Bay) & Kalkajaka (Black Mountain) National Parks.
Our operations have been thoughtfully designed to ensure minimal impact on the pristine environment that surrounds our Eco Lodge and we are always striving to improve. With more than 35 years of local Far North Queensland experience, we are 100% committed to creating memorable and educational travel experiences that preserve the delicate rainforest whilst offering an escape from the daily grind
Our waste system minimises wastewater through an evaporation process which allows us to utilise the water constructively and produce less waste output.
Through utilising gravity, we minimise our use of pumps to supply water to different areas of the property. This ensures we are using less energy and reducing our reliance on machinery.
Chlorine is a requirement to ensure our pool remains hygienic and inviting for guests however, with minimal chemical use, we are able to ensure birds and wildlife have somewhere to drink during the dry season and reduce our environmental impact.
It sounds simple but drying linen on clotheslines in the sun dramatically reduces the need for machine drying thus reducing energy consumption on a daily activity.
Since 2007, we have been using eco-friendly lighting that not only minimises energy usage but also light pollution. The lighting lasts longer and is recyclable meaning less waste going to landfill.
Throughout the lodge, we have a comprehensive recycling program to promote a circular economy. This is not just front of house with clearly labelled recycling opportunities for guests but also behind the scenes and built into our processes and procedures.
Our visitors are encouraged to stick to clearly marked tracks on rainforest walks as this ensures the least disturbance to the rainforest habitat. This not only protects the flora, fauna, and wildlife but also allows for a more authentic experience for our guests.
Creating a spectacle out of an endemic species for the sake of tourism does not align with our philosophy. We encourage guests to explore and keep their eyes peeled for sightings but have never exploited a species for tourism dollars.
We have a responsibility to the earth and one of the ways we can honour that is by ensuring wherever possible that we source the products we use in our operations locally and from businesses that use sustainable practices even if that may mean it costs a little bit more.
Bordering the Wet Tropics World Heritage Rainforest National Park whilst being a privately owned nature reserve, we are in a unique position as a vital buffer to this area. Through ensuring we deliver every effort to conserve the area and produce minimal impact on the natural surroundings, we can continue to ensure that people have access to spellbinding nature that is truly unspoiled. This role is something we take very seriously.

Mungumby Lodge was chosen as the ideal base for Sir David Attenborough and his team for their visit and the filming of “First Life” in Far North Queensland due to its unique biodiversity, variety in micro ecosystems and our contribution to the conservation of such a valuable natural resource.
As a world-renowned naturalist, Sir David prefers to stay in nature-based accommodations that are dedicated to preserving the wildlife habitats in which they are located. He has famously been quoted as saying that Far North Queensland is his favourite place in Australia and we are very proud to have been chosen to host him.
Our focus on continual improvement of our operations highlights our dedication to environmental stewardship. We have a number of projects that we are working towards implementing and always welcome new ideas of ways we can improve our sustainability. With the help of our guests, we foresee a long and healthy future for our precious rainforest surrounds.
