To the left the Subaru Forest is a very versatile AWD able to visit all highlights, so well suited to our region year-round. In the middle a Toyota Landcruiser, large high set 4WD vehicle that will go anywhere, year-round. To the right a Mazda hatch suitable May – December over the drier months, able to take you safely on most sealed and formed unsealed roads to key attractions.
The Mulligan Highway north is one of the nicest well maintained highways on the eastern seaboard. You can drive for an hour before seeing others in the low season, the scenery is spectacular as are the birds making for a great adventure. Minimal mobile reception the further north you travel and few stops so plan your trip as your in the outback.
The coastal route is largely sealed with the exception of what is left of the Bloomfield Track between Wujal Wujal & Cape Tribulation (4×4 only in wet season Dec-April and AWD May-Nov subject to weather) Between Wujal Wujal and Cape Tribulation there are steep climbs, narrow sections and a few water creek crossings even in the dry. It is one Australia’s greatest drives. Double check your hire car agreement as some of the big international car rental firms in Cairns are renting out expensive 4×4 vehicles (above Toyota Landcruiser) then telling clients at pickup they cannot do the Bloomfield Track. This vehicle would do the Bloomfield track and any other track available without flinching. We understand for the CREB Track between Wujal Wujal to the western head of the Daintree River as this can be serious 4WDriving and not suited to rental cars at all.
